The Story Behind the Work

I’ve loved making things for as long as I can remember. When I moved from Durham, North Carolina to Crested Butte at age 11, creating art became one of the ways I adjusted to a totally new place. A family friend who used to babysit me—and who worked in costume design—was one of my earliest inspirations. We would make clothes and jewelry together, and that’s where I first realized how much I enjoyed turning ideas into something real.

Fast forward to fifth grade, when I tried sewing for the first time. I didn’t expect it to become such a big part of my life. At first it was just curiosity, but it slowly turned into one of the main ways I express myself.

I’ve been sewing for three years now, and every project teaches me something different. Sometimes it’s patience, sometimes it’s paying closer attention, and sometimes it’s learning to trust my own ideas. Sewing is one of the few things that makes me feel calm and excited at the same time.

Working on two theater productions and two dance performances made me realize how much I love stagecraft. I helped with costume design, wardrobe, and even some set design, and I loved being part of the team that brings stories to life. There’s something special about watching a character or a moment click into place because the costume or setting feels right—and knowing I helped make that happen.

That’s why the Stagecraft program at DSA feels right for me. I want a place that pushes me, inspires me, and gives me room to try bigger and harder things. I can see myself growing there, and I’m ready for that challenge.
